Marafiki Foundation Granted Tax-Exemption Status March 2008--Charlottesville, VA Marafiki Foundation, Inc. has been granted status as a 501(c)3 tax exempt organization by the IRS. With news of this tax exemption status, Marafiki Foundation will soon begin soliciting donations and grants to support programatic operations. Marafiki Foundation's first major project will be to work with other non-profits and corporations to build an infectious disease diagnostics manufacturing facility in Tanzania. This project will involve partnering with architects, builders, biotechnology companies, and Tanzanian organizations to facilitate this project. The following are the founding Directors: Eric R Houpt, MD, Hyang-Sook Lee, JD, and Mark A White, PhD. Eric R Houpt was elected President and Crystal R Icenhour, PhD was appointed as Executive Director. Marafiki Foundation was created to facilitate technology transfer to developing nations. This foundation is currently seeking funding to support its first project of transfering rapid HIV test technologies to Tanzania through construction of a local manufacturing facility.
