Eric R. Houpt, MD

Dr. Houpt serves as President and Chair of the Board of Directors. He is Assistant Professor in the Division of Infectious Diseases and International Health at the University of Virginia. His professional interest is in tropical infections, particularly intestinal protozoa. He previously trained at Emory and the University of Chicago, and has worked as a ward physician in a mission hospital in Papua New Guinea and at the Kilimanjaro Medical Centre in Tanzania. Since 2002 he has performed a number of clinical projects on diagnostics for tropical infections including amebiasis, cryptosporidiosis, and giardia infection among Tanzanian AIDS patients. Newer projects in Tanzania include studies on the burden of cryptococcal meningitis and tuberculosis. Dr. Houpt holds NIH grants in amebiasis and diagnostics for protozoal pathogens and was the 2002 Infectious Diseases Society of America Young Investigator in Vaccine Development. He attends on the UVA Infectious Diseases consultation service and the Traveler’s Clinic and started the 4th year medical school elective on Global Health.

Hyang-Sook Lee, JD

Ms. Lee is currently Senior Counsel in the Bankruptcy and Restructuring practice group of the law firm Simpson Thacher & Bartlett. Ms. Lee specializes in syndicated loan financings, particularly in the bankruptcy and restructuring contexts, and has significant experience in the representation of financial institutions in a range of transactions including acquisition financings, working capital financings, debtor-in-possession financings, pre-packaged bankruptcy cases and exit financings extended to reorganized debtors.

Mark A. White, PhD

Mark White is Associate Professor of Commerce at the University of Virginia's McIntire School of Commerce, where he specializes in the teaching of corporate finance, international finance, and courses examining business' relationship with the natural environment. His current research focuses on the use of ecological capital, a topic melding his expertise in financial modeling with his interests in environmental conservation. Professor White is actively engaged in the identification and evaluation of innovative business strategies for achieving a sustainable society.

 

Marafiki Foundation Staff

Crystal R. Icenhour, PhD

Dr. Icenhour serves as the Executive Director for Marafiki Foundation. She also serves as President & Director of Research for Phthisis Diagnostics, a biotech company that develops molecular diagnostic tests for infectious diseases.  Additionally, Dr. Icenhour is Chair of the National Postdoctoral Association, a non-profit group dedicated to improving the US Research Enterprise and postdoctoral experience. Dr. Icenhour is a medical researcher, trained in infectious disease research at University of Cincinnati, Mayo Clinic College of Medicine, and Duke University Medical Center. 

 

Richard O. Roberts, III

Mr. Roberts serves as the Program Manager for Marafik Foundation.  He has spent time in Tanzania and studied the economics of this region through the University of Virginia.
